We're so excited to have you here! Here's what we have planned for this week:
Day 1: What is design, anyway?
Day 2: Let’s make some toast
Day 3: Building your brand
Day 4: Crazy 8’s!
Day 5: The worst idea
What is design, anyway?
There are hundreds of practices under the umbrella-term of design. Some example are: industrial design, interior design, graphic design, interaction design, etc etc. If you ask five different designers, you will get five different answers. To me (who studies user experience design), it is all about solving problems intentionally and creatively. Designers are always pushing the boundaries of innovation, coming up with things that fulfill people’s needs. Most people, when thinking about design, traditionally consider its role to be improving the visual appearance of a product or experience. As design has become more of a common term, it has morphed to be an interdisciplinary approach to considering and solving problems. As I grow as a designer, my understanding of design will surely evolve as well.
A designer’s mindset
We can’t teach all the crafts of design as a magic solution for all through one week. Nonetheless, we hope that you will be able to feel inspired and enjoy a safe space to experiment and fail.
As the global design company IDEO puts it:
“We adopt a ‘beginner’s mind’, with the intent to remain open and curious, to assume nothing, and to see ambiguity as an opportunity.”
But Ariel, my drawing skills are terrible :(
Mine as well (LOL!) We are not focusing on formal drawing; rather, the goal is to use rough sketching to rapidly record, explore, and communicate visual ideas. To warm you up, we will start with a game today:
The Martians Have Landed
What you'll need: Paper; sketching utensils
Instructions: The Martians have landed in Ann Arbor. They don’t understand our language, but they can understand visual symbols. Use ONLY visual symbols to represent the concept of the Big House. Where is it? What does it look like? What do people do there, and how do they feel?
Don't forget to share your work with us on Instagram or Facebook with #cocollabcreativechallenge or reply to this email! We'd love to see what you come up with and hear what you thought of this challenge!
